FSSAI, explained

Home / Guides / FSSAI, explained

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is India’s national food regulator. It was set up under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, and works under the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare.

What FSSAI does

  • Sets science-based standards for food products, additives and contaminants.
  • Licenses and registers food businesses, from manufacturers to retailers.
  • Sets rules for labelling, packaging and claims.
  • Oversees food testing and surveillance.

The licence number on the pack

Packaged foods sold in India must show the FSSAI logo and the business’s 14-digit licence or registration number. This shows the food business operator is licensed or registered with the regulator. You can check a licence number on FSSAI’s public portal.

Freshcon

Freshcon describes its pre-cooked legumes and sweet corn as “FSSAI approved”, and says its shredded coconut is produced in a “Food Safety certified Plant”.
