Shelf life without preservatives

Home / Guides / Shelf life without preservatives

“Preservative-free” does not mean “short-lived”. Food can stay safe for a long time without added preservatives, as long as microorganisms are controlled some other way. Two methods matter for Freshcon’s range.

1. Heat plus a hermetic seal

Sealing food in an airtight pack and sterilising it with heat (see high-temperature sterilisation) gives shelf-stable food that needs no refrigeration until opened. Freshcon describes its pre-cooked legumes and sweet corn this way, with “No refrigeration needed, long shelf life”.

2. Freezing

Freezing stops microbial growth and slows chemical changes. Foods frozen soon after preparation keep much of their fresh character. Freshcon’s shredded coconut is “frozen when fresh”, “packed fresh and is kept frozen”, and packed to prevent freezer burn.

Read the label

Always follow the storage and use-by instructions on the pack. Frozen products should stay frozen until use. Shelf-stable packs should be refrigerated after opening and used promptly.
